Xavier University sophomoreguard and tri-captain Semaj Christon is one of three unanimous selections by the coaches to the six-member BIG EAST Conference First Team, which was announced today. Junior center and tri-captain Matt Stainbrook was one of four players named BIG EAST Honorable Mention.
Creighton forward Doug McDermott and Providence guard Bryce Cotton were also unanimous selections to the BIG EAST First Team. In addition to McDermott, Cotton and Christon, Markel Starks of Georgetown, D'Angelo Harrison of St. John's and James Bell of Villanova were named to the first team.
Christon leads XU in scoring and is fourth in the BIG EAST at 17.0 ppg. He is second on the team and sixth in the BIG EAST in assists at 4.1 apg. and leads the team in steals at 1.4 spg., which ranks fourth in the BIG EAST. Christon raised his scoring average to 18.7 ppg. (third in the BIG EAST) for the 18 BIG EAST regular season games. Christon has scored in double figures in 47 of the last 50 games, including each of the last 19 games and a team-high 27 times this season. He enters the BIG EAST Tournament just 16 points shy of 1,000 career points.
Stainbrook leads Xavier in rebounding at 7.8 rpg., which ranks second in the BIG EAST Conference and is third in scoring at 10.6 ppg, which ranks 27th in the BIG EAST. In addition, Stainbrook is first on the team and seventh in the BIG EAST in blocks at 1.0 bpg. and is second in the BIG EAST in field goal percentage at .546. Stainbrook, a very good passer who ranks third on the team in assists at 2.3 apg., is ranked 14th in the BIG EAST in assists for conference games only at 2.6 apg. Stainbrook suffered a strain of the MCL (medial collateral ligament) in his left knee during the first half of Xavier's game at Seton Hall on March 3. He missed the Villanova game on March 6 and is day-to-day going forward.
