It's incredibly rude to whip out your phone and use it in a movie theater. Our little screens are so bright, they distract EVERYONE. But it's not ILLEGAL.
On Monday, a writer named Alex Billington was at the Toronto International Film Festival, screening a horror movie for a website called FirstShowing.net.
And a guy in the front row kept using his phone. It's not clear if he was making a call, it sounds like he was just texting or something. But Alex felt like it was ruining the movie.
He complained, but the film festival bosses told Alex there was nothing they could do. So Alex went to the COPS. He called 911, and said the guy might be PIRATING the movie. But the dispatcher laughed at him.
That should've ended it, but Alex wasn't willing to let it die . . . and started tweeting like crazy about it. That got him some attention . . . but not in a good way.
Because Alex was at a special screening for critics and members of the film industry, and apparently they ALWAYS use their phones during screenings, since they're taking notes. So people gave him grief for abusing 911.
And actually, this Alex guy sounds like a jackass. He even quoted STEVE JOBS to insinuate what he was doing was a REVOLUTIONARY and noble act to change mankind. Now he admits he overreacted. But no charges will be filed for abuse of 911.
